Catherine Elizabeth Middleton was born in Reading, England on January 9, 1982. Her parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, were airline workers who later founded a party supply company. Kate has two younger siblings, a sister and a brother. For a time the family lived in the Kingdom of Jordan, where Kate's father was working, but in 1986 they returned to Britain.

In 2001, Kate Middleton enrolled at the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. That was where she met Prince William, heir to the British throne. "We were friends for over a year first and it just sort of blossomed," Prince William said in an ITV News interview after their engagement.

In the same interview, Kate said when she first met the prince, she "went bright red... and sort of scuttled off, feeling very shy." However, she said, "We did become very close friends from quite early on."

Catherine Middleton graduated from St Andrews in 2005 with a degree in History of Art. Prince William also graduated that year. The two remained a couple, although they tried to avoid publicity about their relationship.

In 2007, William and Kate broke up. "At the time I wasn't very happy about it, but actually it made me a stronger person," said Kate after their engagement. After a separation of several months, the two were reported to have reconciled.

As the years passed without an engagment announcement, gossip and rumors ran rampant about William and his girlfriend, who was nicknamed "Waity Katie" by the media because she was supposedly waiting for an engagement ring. During that time, Kate worked for her parents' company, Party Pieces, and also worked part-time as a buyer for a clothing company. Her hobbies include photography, painting, hill walking, tennis, swimming, and sailing.

In October 2010, during a private holiday in Kenya, Prince William surprised Kate with a marriage proposal. He gave her the sapphire and diamond ring that had once belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana. "It's my mother's engagement ring... This was my way of keeping her close to it all," he explained in the couple's post-engagement interview.

On November 16, 2010, the engagement of Prince William and Catherine Middleton was officially announced. The wedding took place on April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey in London. Prince William and Catherine Middleton are now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
